Project Management Professional (PMP)
The PMP is PMI's main certification for experienced project managers. It tests how you lead people, run the delivery process and handle the business context of a project across predictive, agile and hybrid approaches. Since July 2026 it follows a new exam outline with more weight on the business environment. If you do not yet have the required project experience, the CAPM is PMI's entry-level alternative.
Who it is for
- Project managers with at least 2 to 5 years of experience leading projects, depending on education level
- Team leads, coordinators and consultants who already run projects and want a widely recognized credential
- Professionals moving into program or portfolio roles who need a recognized baseline in project management
- Newer practitioners without the required experience, who should look at the CAPM first

FAQ
How hard is the PMP exam?
It is a demanding exam. Most questions are scenarios where several answers look reasonable and you have to pick the best one for the situation and the delivery approach. Knowing the terms is not enough: you have to apply them, and the 2026 version adds case studies and graphic-based questions.
How long does it take to prepare?
It depends on your experience. Many candidates study for about two to three months alongside work, including the 35 hours of required training. Plan more time if most of your experience is in only one approach, such as only predictive or only agile.
How do I keep my PMP active?
The certification runs on a 3-year cycle. You need 60 professional development units (PDUs) in each cycle and must pay the renewal fee. PDUs come from activities such as courses, webinars, work experience and giving back to the profession.
How much does the PMP cost?
The exam fee is lower for PMI members. Secondary sources report USD 445 for members and USD 675 for non-members since August 2026, and PMI notes that prices can vary by region. Budget separately for the required 35 hours of training, study materials and renewal.
