How to use this AWS Cloud Practitioner study guide
This AWS Cloud Practitioner study guide turns the official CLF-C02 exam guide into a week-by-week plan. The Cloud Practitioner is AWS's foundational certification. It checks that you understand what the AWS Cloud is, how its core services fit together, how security is shared between AWS and the customer, and how AWS pricing and support work. It does not ask you to build or code anything.
AWS says the target candidate has up to 6 months of exposure to AWS, but that experience is not required, and the exam suits people without an IT background. That makes it a good first cloud credential for students, career changers and non-technical staff who work alongside cloud teams.
The plan below assumes about 6 to 8 hours of study a week. If you already work with AWS, compress it into three weeks. If cloud computing is completely new to you, stretch it to five or six.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Questions | 65 (50 scored, 15 unscored) |
| Time | 90 minutes |
| Passing score | 700 on a 100 to 1,000 scale (compensatory) |
| Price | USD 100 per attempt (taxes and exchange rates may apply) |
| Retake rule | Wait 14 calendar days, pay the full fee again, no attempt limit |
| Prerequisites | None |
| Validity | 3 years |
| Suggested study time | 3 to 4 weeks at 6 to 8 hours a week (our estimate) |
CLF-C02 exam facts you need before you start
- Exam code: CLF-C02.
- Questions: 65, of which 50 are scored and 15 are unscored. You cannot tell which ones are unscored.
- Time: 90 minutes.
- Question types: multiple choice (one correct answer out of four) and multiple response (two or more correct answers out of five or more options).
- Scoring: a scaled score from 100 to 1,000, with 700 needed to pass. Scoring is compensatory, so you need to pass the exam overall, not each domain.
- Guessing: unanswered questions are scored as incorrect and there is no penalty for guessing, so never leave a question blank.
- Delivery: a Pearson VUE test center or online proctored.
- Validity: 3 years.
The four domains and their weights, from the official CLF-C02 exam guide:
| Domain | Weight | Roughly how many of the 50 scored questions |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud Technology and Services | 34% | about 17 |
| Security and Compliance | 30% | about 15 |
| Cloud Concepts | 24% | about 12 |
| Billing, Pricing, and Support | 12% | about 6 |
The question counts are our own arithmetic from the published weights, not an AWS figure, and the exact mix can vary between exam forms.
The 4-week study plan mapped to the CLF-C02 domains
This plan follows the domain weights: the two biggest domains get the most time, and the last week is for practice tests and fixing gaps. Keep the official exam guide open as your checklist and tick off each task statement as you cover it.
Week 1: Cloud Concepts (24%)
- Learn the benefits of the AWS Cloud: paying only for what you use, scaling up and down, speed of deployment and global reach.
- Understand the six pillars of the AWS Well-Architected Framework and what each one is for.
- Learn the main migration ideas and cloud economics: fixed versus variable costs, and why rightsizing matters.
- Learn the AWS global infrastructure: Regions, Availability Zones and edge locations, and why you would deploy across several Availability Zones.
- End of week: a short untimed practice set on Cloud Concepts only.
Week 2: Security and Compliance (30%)
- Master the shared responsibility model. Know which tasks belong to AWS and which belong to the customer for different service types.
- Learn IAM: users, groups, roles and policies, the root user and why you protect it, and multi-factor authentication.
- Learn where to find compliance information and which services help with security monitoring, threat detection, encryption and key management.
- Open an AWS Free Tier account and create an IAM user with MFA yourself. Doing it once makes the questions far easier.
- End of week: a practice set covering weeks 1 and 2 together.
Week 3: Cloud Technology and Services (34%)
- Compute: EC2 and its purchasing options, containers and serverless options such as AWS Lambda.
- Storage: S3 and its storage classes, block storage and file storage, and when each fits.
- Databases: relational versus NoSQL options, and managed database services.
- Networking: VPCs, subnets, security groups, and content delivery and DNS services.
- Ways to work with AWS: the console, the CLI, SDKs and infrastructure as code.
- Hands-on: launch a small EC2 instance, create an S3 bucket, then delete both so you are not charged.
Week 4: Billing, Pricing, and Support (12%), then full practice exams
- Spend the first two days on pricing models (on-demand, reserved, savings plans, spot), billing and cost management tools, and the AWS Support plans and what each includes.
- Take a full timed practice exam: 65 questions in 90 minutes.
- Review every question, including the ones you got right, and note why each wrong option is wrong.
- Re-study your weakest domain, then take a second full practice exam two or three days later.
- Book the exam when you score comfortably above the passing standard on fresh practice questions, not ones you have already seen.
You can start right now with the free AWS practice test on PrepVerdict. Taking short practice sets from week 1, rather than saving them for the end, is one of the best-supported study techniques; see our guide to the testing effect.
AWS Cloud Practitioner exam cost
The AWS Cloud Practitioner exam cost is USD 100 per attempt. AWS notes that additional costs and foreign exchange rates may apply depending on where you sit the exam, and that exam prices are updated at least once a year, in May, to reflect exchange rates. Local taxes can also be added at checkout.
Here is what the full cost can look like:
| Item | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Exam registration | USD 100 | Valid for one attempt. Price can differ by country because of exchange rates and taxes. |
| Retake | USD 100 per attempt | You pay the full fee again and must wait 14 calendar days. There is no limit on attempts. |
| Late cancellation or no-show | Fee forfeited | Changes within 24 hours of the appointment are not refunded, except for documented illness or emergencies. |
| Hands-on practice | Usually USD 0 | The AWS Free Tier covers small experiments. Set a billing alert and delete what you create. |
| Study materials | USD 0 and up | The official exam guide is free, and AWS lists free Exam Readiness digital courses. Paid courses are optional. |
| Recertification after 3 years | Varies | Pass the current Cloud Practitioner exam, pass any Associate- or Professional-level exam, or complete the AWS Cloud Quest: Recertify Cloud Practitioner course. |
One benefit is worth planning around: AWS gives certified people access to a 50% discount voucher that can be used for recertification or any other AWS exam. If you plan to go on to the Solutions Architect - Associate, that voucher cuts the cost of your next exam. See the AWS certification path for which exam usually comes next.
You can reschedule an appointment up to twice, and only up to 24 hours before it starts. Cancelling later, or not turning up, means losing the fee.
What trips people up on CLF-C02
The Cloud Practitioner is an entry-level exam, but people still fail it, usually for predictable reasons.
- Similar-sounding services. Many questions ask you to pick the right service for a need. Make a one-line description of each in-scope service and quiz yourself on it until you can tell similar ones apart.
- The shared responsibility model. Questions often hinge on whether something is AWS's job or the customer's. The answer changes with the service type, so learn the principle, not a memorized list.
- Multiple-response questions. The question tells you how many answers to choose. Partly right answers do not earn credit, so read every option.
- Ignoring the small domain. Billing, Pricing, and Support is only 12%, but it is mostly straightforward recall. Those are points you can bank.
- Practising on remembered questions. A high score on a test you have taken three times measures memory, not readiness. Always judge readiness on questions you have not seen.
On exam day, flag any question that takes more than a minute and come back to it. 90 minutes for 65 questions leaves time for a review pass if you keep moving.
Is the AWS Cloud Practitioner worth it?
It depends on your goal. For someone with no cloud background, it gives a structured overview of AWS and a credential you can earn in weeks for a modest fee. For non-technical roles in sales, finance, procurement or project management, it shows you can follow technical conversations about AWS.
For engineers who already build on AWS, the Cloud Practitioner adds less. AWS itself recommends that people with no IT experience start here, while people with about a year of hands-on AWS work often go straight to the Solutions Architect - Associate.
