What this PL-300 study guide covers

This PL-300 study guide gives you an 8-week plan for Exam PL-300: Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst, mapped to the skills measured as of April 20, 2026. Passing PL-300 earns the Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate, which is the Power BI certification most people mean when they search for one.

Exam facts come from Microsoft Learn: the PL-300 study guide, the certification page, and Microsoft's pages on exam duration, scoring, retakes and renewal, checked on November 7, 2026. The study plan is our editorial recommendation.

PL-300 exam facts

  • Time: 100 minutes of exam time. Microsoft's table for associate role-based exams without labs gives 120 minutes of seat time, which includes instructions, the candidate agreement and optional comments.
  • Questions: Microsoft does not publish a count for PL-300. It says most of its certification exams contain 40 to 60 questions and the number can vary.
  • Question types: Microsoft does not list them in advance, but its free exam sandbox shows the formats you may see, such as multiple choice, drag and drop, hot area, build list and case studies.
  • Passing score: 700 or greater on Microsoft's scaled scoring.
  • Price: set by the country or region where the exam is proctored; you see it when you book through Pearson VUE.
  • Languages: English, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified), Korean, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Chinese (Traditional) and Italian.
  • Prerequisites: none. Microsoft expects you to be proficient in Power Query and DAX.
  • Retakes: wait 24 hours after a first failed attempt, then 14 days between later attempts, with a maximum of five attempts in 12 months.
  • Renewal: the certification is valid for 12 months. You renew it free by passing an online assessment on Microsoft Learn.

One feature many candidates miss: on associate and expert exams you can open Microsoft Learn in a split screen during the exam. The clock keeps running and no extra time is added, so treat it as a way to check one detail, not to look up every answer.

PL-300 skills measured

The exam has four skill areas. Microsoft gives weight ranges, not exact percentages:

Skill areaWeightMain objectives
Prepare the data25-30%Get or connect to data; profile and clean the data; transform and load the data
Model the data25-30%Design and implement a data model; create model calculations by using DAX; optimize model performance
Visualize and analyze the data25-30%Create reports; enhance reports for usability and storytelling; identify patterns and trends
Manage and secure Power BI15-20%Create and manage workspaces and assets; secure and govern Power BI items

The April 20, 2026 update made only minor changes, in getting or connecting to data, report usability and storytelling, and workspace management. The current list includes choosing between DirectLake, DirectQuery and Import, creating calculation groups, visual calculations, and several Copilot tasks, such as creating a narrative visual, creating or suggesting a report page, and summarizing the semantic model. Microsoft updates the English exam first; localized versions follow about eight weeks later.

The 8-week PL-300 study plan

This plan assumes 6 to 8 hours a week, with Power BI Desktop installed and a free or work account for the Power BI service. Every week ends with practice questions on what you covered.

WeekSkill areaWhat to build and learn
1Prepare the dataConnect to files, databases and a shared semantic model. Change source settings, credentials and privacy levels. Learn when to use Import, DirectQuery and DirectLake. Create parameters.
2Prepare the dataProfile columns, fix nulls and errors, set data types. Pivot, unpivot, group, merge and append. Learn reference vs duplicate queries. Build fact and dimension tables and configure query loading.
3Model the dataBuild a star schema. Set cardinality and cross-filter direction, create a common date table, implement role-playing dimensions. Decide when calculated columns or tables make sense.
4Model the dataDAX: aggregation measures, CALCULATE and filter context, time intelligence, semi-additive measures, quick measures and calculation groups. Use Performance Analyzer and DAX query view to find slow measures and visuals.
5Visualize and analyzeChoose and format visuals, themes, conditional formatting, slicers and filters. Try Copilot report features. Learn when a paginated report is the right choice. Create visual calculations.
6Visualize and analyzeBookmarks, custom tooltips, visual interactions, drillthrough, sync slicers, mobile layout, accessibility, personalization, automatic page refresh. Analyze feature, grouping and binning, AI visuals, forecasting and anomaly detection.
7Manage and securePublish to a workspace, configure an app, subscriptions and data alerts. Promote or certify content. Set scheduled refresh and learn when a gateway is required. Assign workspace roles, implement row-level security and apply sensitivity labels.
8AllMicrosoft's free practice assessment, the exam sandbox, and two timed mixed sessions. Rework your weakest objectives from the skills measured list.

If you already build Power BI reports at work, you can probably combine weeks 5 and 6. Most people who struggle do so in weeks 3 and 4: modeling and DAX are where the exam is least forgiving.

Topics that cause the most mistakes

These objectives are where several answers tend to look right at first glance, so we recommend giving them extra time:

  • Filter context and CALCULATE. Know how CALCULATE changes filters and why a measure returns the same value on every row.
  • Relationships. One-to-many vs many-to-many, single vs both-direction filtering, and inactive relationships used through DAX.
  • Storage modes. When Import, DirectQuery or DirectLake fits, and what each means for refresh and performance.
  • Reference vs duplicate queries. A reference query depends on the original; a duplicate copies its steps.
  • Semi-additive measures. Balances and inventory that should not be summed over time.
  • Row-level security. Defining roles in the model and assigning members in the service.

How to prepare: practice tests and hands-on work

PL-300 is a skills exam, so reading alone is not enough. We recommend this routine:

  1. Use one dataset for the whole plan and keep extending the same model. You will understand relationships and DAX far better than with disconnected exercises.
  2. Work through the free self-paced PL-300 learning paths on Microsoft Learn alongside the plan.
  3. Answer practice questions after each week, then mix all four skill areas from week 6. See our page on interleaving for why mixing helps.
  4. Keep an error log of every missed question and the objective it maps to.
  5. Take Microsoft's free practice assessment and try the exam sandbox before you book.

Is this the right Power BI certification for you?

For most people who build reports and models in Power BI, yes. PL-300 is Microsoft's intermediate exam for Power BI data analysts. If your work is closer to engineering, such as building lakehouses, warehouses and enterprise semantic models in Microsoft Fabric with SQL, KQL and DAX, look at the Microsoft Certified: Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate (Exam DP-600) instead, or after PL-300.

If you are new to cloud concepts in general, a fundamentals exam such as AZ-900 or AI-900 can come first, but neither is required for PL-300. For a wider view of entry points, see our list of the best IT certifications.

How long to study for PL-300

Microsoft does not publish recommended study hours or pass rates. Our rough editorial estimate:

  • Daily Power BI user: 3 to 5 weeks, focused on the objectives you do not use at work, such as security, calculation groups and Copilot features.
  • Excel power user new to Power BI: 8 weeks, as in the plan above.
  • New to data analysis: 10 to 12 weeks, with extra time on data modeling and DAX basics.

Book the exam when you consistently score well on timed, mixed practice questions you have not seen. After you pass, put a reminder in your calendar: you need to pass the free renewal assessment before your certification expires in 12 months.
