PRINCE2 Foundation vs Practitioner in one paragraph
The PRINCE2 Foundation vs Practitioner difference is knowing versus applying. The Foundation certification checks that you understand the PRINCE2 method well enough to work on a project that uses it. The Practitioner certification checks that you can apply and tailor the method to a realistic project scenario, which is what you need if you will run projects with it.
Both are awarded by PeopleCert, which owns PRINCE2. The current edition is PRINCE2 7, which PeopleCert now lists as PRINCE2 Project Management Foundation (Version 7) and PRINCE2 Project Management Practitioner (Version 7). All exam facts below come from PeopleCert's official Version 7 pages, checked on 7 November 2026.

What the PRINCE2 Foundation certification covers
The PRINCE2 Foundation certification is the entry level and has no prerequisites. PeopleCert describes it as suitable for any career stage. The exam covers the building blocks of PRINCE2 7:
- Seven principles, such as continued business justification, manage by stages and manage by exception, which guide every decision on a PRINCE2 project.
- Seven practices, the aspects of project management handled continuously: business case, organising, plans, quality, risk, issues and progress.
- Seven processes, the step-by-step journey from starting up a project to closing it.
- People, roles and responsibilities, which Version 7 gives more weight than earlier editions.
- Project context and tailoring, plus newer themes in Version 7 such as sustainability in project performance and digital and data management.
Questions are mostly about recognising the right definition, purpose or role. In a closed-book exam, that means memorising the vocabulary: which role approves what, what each management product is for, and which process does what.
What PRINCE2 Practitioner adds
The Practitioner exam is built around a project scenario. Instead of asking what a practice is, it asks what you should do in this situation, which product is missing, or whether a proposed action is appropriate and why. That is why it is longer, at 150 minutes, and open book.
Open book does not mean easy. You will not have time to look up every answer, and the questions test judgement: tailoring the method to a project's size, complexity and context, and applying the principles when the scenario does not fit the textbook. Use the book to confirm details, not to learn them during the exam. PeopleCert's exam rules set out which materials you may bring, so check them when you book.
Because 70 marks are spread across 56 questions and sub-questions, some items carry more than one mark. Read the instructions on each one carefully.
PRINCE2 Practitioner prerequisites: you may not need Foundation
Many people assume Foundation is compulsory. It is not, if you hold another recognised qualification. PeopleCert's Practitioner page says completion of one of the following is required:
- PRINCE2 Project Management Foundation (Version 7)
- PRINCE2 6th Edition or 5th Edition (Foundation or Practitioner)
- Project Management Professional (PMP) or Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) from PMI
- Project Professional Qualification (PPQ) or Project Management Qualification (PMQ)
- IPMA Level A, B, C or D
- Several further qualifications on PeopleCert's full list, such as CSPM-2 and CSPM-3
So a PMP holder can go straight to PRINCE2 Practitioner. If that is you, our PMP vs PRINCE2 comparison explains where the two overlap and where they differ. If you hold an older PRINCE2 Practitioner, you are also eligible, although you will need to learn the Version 7 changes.
Cost: what PeopleCert charges
Most people buy PRINCE2 exams through a training provider, often bundled with a course, so prices vary widely. PeopleCert also sells directly. When we checked its store on 7 November 2026, the cheapest self-study bundles, which include the exam voucher and official materials, were listed at:
| Bundle (PeopleCert store) | Foundation | Practitioner |
|---|---|---|
| Exam bundle (self-study) | EUR 650 incl. VAT | EUR 701 incl. VAT |
| eLearning bundle | EUR 1,369 incl. VAT | EUR 1,617 incl. VAT |
| eLearning+ bundle (adds mock exam and free retake) | EUR 1,617 incl. VAT | EUR 1,864 incl. VAT |
These are the prices PeopleCert showed us for our region; VAT and currency depend on where you buy, so check the price for your country before you pay. Doing both levels costs roughly the two bundles combined, which is why many providers sell a combined Foundation and Practitioner package.
How to study for each level
For Foundation, the job is memorisation with understanding. Learn the seven principles, practices and processes until you can explain each in one sentence, and learn which role is responsible for which decision. Flashcards and spaced review work well here, because the closed-book exam rewards exact recall of PRINCE2 terms. Take timed sets of 60 questions in 60 minutes until you score comfortably above 60%.
For Practitioner, the job is application. Work through scenario questions with the official manual open, and practise finding things in it quickly: tab the sections on each practice and process. For every question you miss, write down which principle or practice the right answer relied on. Time yourself at 150 minutes for a full paper, since running out of time is a bigger risk on an open-book exam than on a closed-book one.
If you take both levels in one go, which many providers offer, study Foundation material first and sit Foundation before moving to scenario practice. The Practitioner exam assumes you already know the vocabulary without looking it up.
Renewal: keeping your PRINCE2 certification current
PeopleCert's pages list 60 CPD points for renewal on both levels; the Foundation page states renewal every three years, and the Practitioner page says it is subject to renewal. There are two ways to stay current:
- PeopleCert Plus membership, where you log continuing professional development points for everyday professional activities.
- Taking another exam from the same product suite before your renewal date.
Some training sites still say Foundation never expires, which reflects older rules. Go by PeopleCert's page and the status shown in your PeopleCert account.
Which level should you take?
This is our editorial recommendation, based on what each exam tests.
| Your situation | Our recommendation |
|---|---|
| Team member, project support, PMO analyst or stakeholder on PRINCE2 projects | Foundation is enough |
| Project manager, or aiming to become one, in an organisation that uses PRINCE2 | Foundation then Practitioner, often as one combined course |
| Job ad says "PRINCE2 Practitioner required" | Practitioner; Foundation alone will not satisfy it |
| Already PMP, CAPM or IPMA certified | Go straight to Practitioner |
| Holding PRINCE2 6th edition | Practitioner (Version 7), focusing on what changed |
| Not sure you will use PRINCE2 at all | Foundation first, decide later |
Whichever you choose, start with our free PRINCE2 practice test to see how well you know the principles, practices and processes. For Foundation, plan a week or two of steady study; for Practitioner, add time for scenario practice with the official manual at hand. These are our estimates; PeopleCert does not publish recommended study hours. Our guide to how to pass an exam covers the multiple-choice techniques that help on both.
