What is the CAPM certification?

The CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management) is PMI's entry-level project management certification, and it needs no project experience. You qualify with a secondary diploma and 23 hours of project management education. The exam covers project management fundamentals (36%), predictive methods (17%), agile frameworks (20%) and business analysis (27%). Many people take it as a first step before the PMP. It has nothing to do with the CAPM model in finance.

What does CAPM stand for?

In project management, CAPM stands for Certified Associate in Project Management, a certification from PMI (the Project Management Institute). In finance, the same letters mean the capital asset pricing model, which is unrelated. PMI's CAPM is aimed at students, coordinators and team members who want to show they understand how projects are run before they have the experience the PMP requires.

Is the CAPM worth it?

The CAPM is worth it if you are early in your career and want a recognized project management credential before you qualify for the PMP. It shows employers you know PMI's vocabulary and methods, and an active CAPM waives the PMP's 35-hour education requirement. It is worth less if you already meet the PMP experience requirement, because you can apply for the PMP directly. Keeping it costs 15 PDUs every 3 years plus a renewal fee.

How do I get the CAPM certification?

To get the CAPM, complete 23 hours of project management education, apply to PMI with your secondary diploma (high school diploma, GED or global equivalent), then pass the exam. No work experience is needed. Once approved you have 1 year to take the exam, with up to 3 attempts. It is delivered at Pearson VUE test centers or online proctored, and on paper in some locations. Keep your training certificate in case your application is audited.

How hard is the CAPM exam?

The CAPM is an entry-level exam, but it is broad: fundamentals, predictive and agile approaches, and business analysis. Many questions are short scenarios where you apply a concept rather than recall a definition. You answer 150 questions in 3 hours, and PMI does not publish a passing score, so aim for strong, consistent results on practice tests before you book.

How much is the CAPM exam?

Secondary sources report a CAPM exam fee of USD 225 for PMI members and USD 300 for non-members. We could not confirm these amounts on PMI's own pages, and PMI says fees depend on membership status and region, so check pmi.org before you pay. The member rate only applies if your membership is active when you pay. PMI's outline says retakes are discounted, subject to regional and membership pricing.

Can I get a job with just a CAPM?

A CAPM can help you get an entry-level project role, but on its own it rarely replaces experience. It is most useful for roles such as project coordinator, project assistant or junior analyst, where it shows you understand how projects are run. Employers usually weigh it alongside your degree, skills and any project work you have done. Use those roles to build the experience the PMP requires later.

How long should I study for the CAPM?

Plan on about six weeks of part-time study, including the 23 hours of required project management education. Four weeks can work if you already know agile and business analysis basics, while complete beginners may need eight. Judge readiness by your scores on full timed practice exams of 150 questions in 3 hours rather than by the calendar.

What is the CAPM passing score?

PMI does not publish a passing score for the CAPM. PMI exams are criteria-based: the passing standard is set by psychometric analysis, only the 135 scored questions count, and your score report shows pass or fail plus diagnostic performance in each domain. Percentages quoted on prep sites are estimates, not official PMI figures.

How many questions are on the CAPM exam?

The CAPM exam has 150 questions in 180 minutes: 135 scored and 15 unscored pretest questions. There is one optional 10-minute break after question 75, and once you start it you cannot go back to the first section. Question types include multiple choice, drag-and-drop matching, animation or comic-strip items and possibly hot spots. These figures come from PMI's 2023 CAPM outline, the latest official version we found.

How do I renew the CAPM?

You renew the CAPM by earning 15 PDUs in each 3-year cycle and paying the renewal fee. At least 9 PDUs must come from education, and no more than 6 from giving back to the profession. If you later earn the PMP, that certification has its own renewal rule of 60 PDUs every 3 years.

Should I take the CAPM or the PMP?

Take the PMP if you already meet its experience requirement of 24 to 60 months leading projects, depending on your education; otherwise start with the CAPM. The CAPM is not a prerequisite for the PMP and does not count as experience, but while it is active it waives the PMP's 35-hour training requirement. The CAPM exam is also shorter: 150 questions in 3 hours versus 180 in 240 minutes.

Is there a free way to prepare for the CAPM?

The exam is paid, but much of the preparation can be cheap or free. PMI's CAPM Exam Content Outline is free to download and is the best study checklist. The 23 hours of education still have to come from a course; Google, for example, says its Project Management Certificate counts toward the CAPM requirement.
