What is PRINCE2?

PRINCE2 is a process-based project management method, owned by PeopleCert since it took over AXELOS, and also the name of the certifications that test it. The current version 7 is built on five integrated elements: seven principles, people, seven practices, seven processes and the project context. It is widely used by organizations and public bodies in the UK, Europe and Australia.

What is PRINCE2 certification?

PRINCE2 certification comes in two levels from PeopleCert: Foundation and Practitioner. Foundation tests whether you know the method, in a 60-minute, closed-book exam of 60 multiple-choice questions. Practitioner tests whether you can apply it to a scenario, in a 150-minute, open-book exam worth 70 marks. Both need 60% to pass, and both are kept current with 60 CPD points or a new exam.

What does PRINCE2 stand for?

PRINCE2 stands for PRojects IN Controlled Environments, with the 2 marking the second generation of the method. The name has stayed while the method has been revised: the current edition is PRINCE2 7, published in 2023. PeopleCert, which took over AXELOS, owns the method and runs the Foundation and Practitioner exams.

Can I get PRINCE2 for free?

No, PRINCE2 exams are not free: PeopleCert sells them as bundles, directly or through accredited training partners. You can keep costs down by studying from the official PRINCE2 7 manual, which comes as an eBook in PeopleCert's exam bundle, and by using free practice questions such as our PRINCE2 practice test. Some employers pay for PRINCE2 training for staff who work on PRINCE2 projects.

What are the best certifications for project managers?

The most widely recognized project management certifications are the PMP for experienced project managers, the CAPM as PMI's entry-level option, and PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner, which are common in the UK, Europe and Australia. Agile teams often ask for Scrum credentials as well. The best choice depends on your experience and on what employers in your market ask for.

How much does PRINCE2 cost?

On peoplecert.org, the PRINCE2 7 Foundation exam bundle (voucher, official eBook and learning resource kit) was listed at EUR 650 including VAT when we checked on 7 November 2026, and the Practitioner bundle at EUR 701. Those were the prices shown for our location: they differ by country, currency and training partner, and partners price exam-only vouchers separately. eLearning bundles cost more, and the eLearning+ bundle includes a free retake.

Which is harder, PRINCE2 or PMP?

The PMP is harder to get: it requires 24 to 60 months of project leadership experience, 35 hours of training and a 240-minute exam of 180 questions. PRINCE2 Foundation has no prerequisites and a 60-minute exam. Practitioner is a real test of applying the method, with 150 minutes and an open book, but it requires a qualifying certificate rather than years of experience.

Are there any prerequisites for PRINCE2?

PRINCE2 7 Foundation has no prerequisites. Practitioner requires a qualifying certification rather than work experience: PRINCE2 7 Foundation, PRINCE2 6th or 5th edition Foundation or Practitioner, PMP, CAPM, PPQ, PMQ, IPMA Level A to D, or CSPM-2/CSPM-3. So a PMP or CAPM holder can go straight to Practitioner without taking Foundation first.

How hard is the PRINCE2 Foundation exam?

PRINCE2 Foundation is an entry-level exam, but it rewards exact knowledge of the method's terms. You need 36 of 60 multiple-choice questions right in 60 minutes, without the manual. The tricky part is telling similar items apart, such as highlight, checkpoint and exception reports, the project brief and the PID, or the issue register and the daily log.

How many questions are on the PRINCE2 exams?

PRINCE2 7 Foundation has 60 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes. PRINCE2 7 Practitioner has 56 questions and sub-questions worth 70 marks, in 150 minutes. Both are offered in 14 languages, including English, German, French, Spanish, Dutch and Polish, and PeopleCert's pages offer online proctored exam slots.

What is the PRINCE2 pass mark?

The pass mark is 60% for both levels: 36 of 60 questions for Foundation and 42 of 70 marks for Practitioner. PeopleCert says official Foundation results arrive within 2 business days. It does not publish percentage weights per topic, so revise the principles, people, practices, processes and project context evenly.

Is the PRINCE2 Practitioner exam open book?

Yes, PRINCE2 7 Practitioner is open book, while Foundation is closed book. PeopleCert's exam page does not spell out which material you may use; secondary sources say only the official manual, Managing Successful Projects with PRINCE2, is allowed, so check PeopleCert's exam rules when you book. Open book does not make it easy: 150 minutes go quickly if you have to look everything up.

Does PRINCE2 certification expire?

PRINCE2 certifications must be renewed. For Foundation, PeopleCert states renewal every 3 years; the Practitioner page only says it is subject to renewal, so a 3-year cycle is likely but not confirmed. You renew by logging 60 CPD points, for example through PeopleCert Plus membership, or by passing another exam from the same product suite before your renewal date.

How long does it take to study for PRINCE2?

It depends on your background, and PeopleCert does not set a study time. Foundation is mostly about learning the seven principles, seven practices and seven processes, the roles and the management products, so people who already work on projects often need less time. Practitioner takes longer, because you practise applying the method to scenarios with the manual open. Book when timed practice scores sit comfortably above 60%.
